The status of the 2023 Midland Independent School District (MISD) School Bond was provided by the Bond Advisory Committee for the third time this year.

According to a MISD news release, among the topics discussed was the committee’s obligation to the bond. Project timelines regarding construction efforts were presented as the committee examined project costs and the best communication methods to keep the community aware of projects related to the bond.

The district has already earmarked $1.1 million of the $1.4 billion bond to specific projects, according to the news release. The district must follow procurement procedures, according to a presentation given by the committee related to the procurement of professional services and construction processes.

MISD leaders are expected to hold a groundbreaking ceremony on June 6 for a new $53.3 million elementary school that is expected to open in the fall of 2025, according to the news release. The school came in at $8.5 million under the anticipated cost and will be patterned after Fasken and Yarbrough elementaries. The architects on the project discussed the design with faculty at those schools in order to enhance the design of the new school.

According to the news release, a schematic design of two new high schools was also on the agenda. An aerial view of expected traffic flow, parking spaces, fine arts placements, and athletic fields was given, but the design is expected to be altered as projects progress through the design process.
