The Greater West Texas Blues Society is set to host the “Bring Your Own Blues” Open Blues Jam this Thursday from 7 to 11 p.m. at The Destination, located at 1705 W. Industrial Ave in Midland.

This event marks the third season of the popular series, which takes place on the fourth Thursday of each month from March through November. The Open Blues Jam draws local and regional musicians who come together to play and promote blues music in West Texas.

Martin Salazar, co-owner of The Destination, shared the history and transformation of the venue. Once Andy’s Lumber Yard, the site has been revitalized by Salazar and his family using their trades and skills to create a unique gathering space.

“‘Perfect Imperfection’ is what we call it,” Salazar said. “Blending the old with the new, creating a variety of uniquely themed patios that are as beautiful as they are useful. Each one has its own defining charm and is an expression of who we are.”

The Destination first hosted a blues event in 2019 at what they refer to as “The Rustic Patio,” originally on the third weekend of each month. Since 2022, the venue has been open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings from 7 p.m. to midnight. Craig Smith of the Greater West Texas Blues Society approached Salazar three years ago with a goal to promote blues music in West Texas, especially to the younger generation.

Attendance has grown each year, and Salazar expects over 150 attendees at the upcoming event, with an average of 50-plus musicians performing. The musicians range from solo acts to groups of up to eight or more, spanning ages 12 to 80.

“Blues are alive in West Texas!” Salazar said. “This event brings young, upcoming musicians the opportunity to join experienced and seasoned blues musicians in a positive setting to showcase their talents. We aim to continue promoting blues music and encourage more events and venues to join in, showcasing what our local talented musicians have in store for us.”

All Thursday night events are free, open to all ages, and pet-friendly. “It’s a fun place to enjoy live music, food trucks, and a great atmosphere,” Salazar added.
