The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention hosted an “Out of Darkness” Campus Walk at Midland College on April 27. The walk supported survivors of suicide and encouraged students to seek help when needed.
Tracy Sommers, Board President of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, spoke about the importance of creating an environment for students that will enable them to seek help.
"Our goal with the Out of Darkness Campus Walk is to make sure students feel comfortable seeking the help they need, and to support survivors," said Sommers. “The third leading cause of death for ages 10 to 24 is suicide.”
The walk brought together participants from across the campus community. It helped break stigma surrounding mental health, and promoted conversations about suicide prevention, according to Sommers. Attendees had the opportunity to share their stories, honor those affected by suicide, and learn about available resources.
The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention describes itself as a leading non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. The organization works to reduce the incidence of suicide through advocacy, education, and support for research.
