The Hispanic Cultural Center of Midland (HCCM), a children’s nonprofit, shares the culture of Mexico through artistic educational programs. In an interview with Midland Times on April 15, Executive Director of HCCM Cal delaPena discussed what Hispanic culture means to him and how these learning opportunities impact the community.
“The arts allow us to express a profound love for this cultural legacy,” said delaPena. “It’s our heritage, and it’s so beautiful, colorful, and full of life. It’s an honor to share it.”
HCCM provides co-ed training and competition opportunities for children up to 18 years old in ballet Folklorico dance, mariachi singing, and instrument playing. “These programs serve as expressive mediums, reflecting the vitality and essence of a people through their movements and melodies, while also presenting historical representations of the dances and attire,” said delaPena.
Prior to becoming the executive director, delaPena worked for the Hispanic Cultural Center of Midland for over 20 years, where she worked “behind the scenes” on art and graphics and helped create their magazines.
“I find joy in witnessing the transformative impact of the arts on children and I love seeing the kids' faces when a performance or section of music clicks with them,” said delaPena. “Their eyes light up! Having been in the arts for all of my career, I know what it can do for them in their future, and for it to start here is amazing.”
HCCM students engage in performances throughout the year, spanning local elementary schools, competitions, recitals, workshops, and private events. “Through music and dance, these programs foster social interaction, self-expression, and a sense of accomplishment, ultimately enhancing children's academic performance and self-esteem,” delePena said.
delaPena said HCCM will expand its reach to all schools and colleges in the region with partnerships, including with Midland College.
According to their website, HCCM was established in October of 1996 and is located at 1311 E. Wadley.
