This Earth Day, join the Sibley Nature Center for a special environmental awareness event complete with a beer release from Midland's own Waystone Brewing with their aptly named, German-style lager "Captain Planet."
For every brew sold, Waystone will donate $2 to support the Sibley Nature Center's conservation efforts— a cause near and dear to the brewery owners' hearts.
The festivities are free to attend and take place on April 20 from noon to 10 p.m.
The namer "Captain Planet" emerged from nostalgic banter between Waystone Brewery owners husband and wife duo, Ted and Jaylyn Morehouse.
"Many jokes were being cracked," said Jaylyn about reminiscing with her husband on their childhood experiences. As fate would have it, their brainstorming session coincided with completing their latest beer creation, just in time for Earth Day.
The Sibley Nature Center has had a profound impact on the Morehouse family, according to the couple.
"Our relationship with the Sibley Nature Center traces back to our early days in the area," said Jaylyn. "It was a sanctuary for our family, providing enriching experiences and fostering a deep appreciation for the natural beauty of West Texas."
Ted's subsequent involvement with the Sibley board solidified their commitment to the organization. The Morehouses' have both volunteered for the center, with Ted's efforts going toward the wildlife viewing garden, while Jaylyn assumed responsibilities within the gardening committee.
"Earth Day seems to go hand-in-hand with giving back to the community,” Jaylyn said. “Making our earth better starts by making our communities better.”
In addition to the beer release, Waystone Brewing will be giving away pollinator flower seeds to foster the growth of vital ecosystems. Attendees might also catch a glimpse of a few "planeteers" making appearances throughout the event.
Sibley Nature Center festivities will take place from 2 to 5 p.m., and include a behind-the-scenes look at its Spring Festival happening on April 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The festival promises a myriad of engaging activities, including educational sessions, garden tours, crafts, guided nature hikes, and even a reptile magic show.
“We hope that this collaboration will be a chance for the community to come enjoy a pint while learning what Sibley has to offer to the community,” Jaylyn said. “This is our first year doing anything like this, so we will see how it goes and hopefully it can become an annual event.”
