Midland College's Education Department has appointed a new executive director of recruitment, retention and transfer. The newly established role is responsible for creating a pathway to teacher certification for students with dual credit in teacher coursework and transitioning them into teaching positions within the Midland Independent School District.

According to a news release from Midland College, Shelly Haney will lead the department that aims to develop a student and community-focused pathway into teaching. Haney brings over 30 years of experience with Midland ISD to her new role and most recently held the position of Chief of Schools for a local charter school network.

"I am so excited to join the MC team! I look forward to working with local high school and college students as they prepare to achieve their dreams of developing the minds of tomorrow’s leaders," said Haney. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Multidisciplinary Studies with a minor in Mathematics from Texas Tech University, along with a Master of Education in School Leadership and Principal certification from the University of Texas Permian Basin.

Haney's expertise is expected to strengthen partnerships with school districts and increase opportunities for students interested in entering the teaching field, according to the news release. Student Success, which forms the second pillar of the school’s strategic framework, is at the forefront at Midland College. The institution offers an array of facilities and faculty members that provide students with an extensive academic plan aimed at achieving their teaching certificate.

"We are committed to guiding these students every step of the way, regardless of where they begin their journey," said MC President Dr. Damon Kennedy. "We are fortunate to have a robust partnership with MISD and the University of Texas Permian Basin, and together, we are working diligently to ensure a seamless transition from high school to Midland College and on to UTPB's Texas Education Agency's approved Teacher Education Preparation Program."
