Midland ISD is enhancing opportunities for students by expanding access to the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Assessment Test), aligning with its commitment to academic achievement outlined in the district's strategic plan. Eighth graders, freshmen, and sophomores throughout the district will be able to take the PSAT at no cost.

“This opens the PSAT to far more students, and starting in eighth grade gives them up to three times to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT,” said Amanda Melchor, Executive Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning.

Aiming to better prepare students for the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), the Office of Teaching and Learning is implementing this initiative to reach a broader range of students and provide multiple opportunities for preparation.

“This opens the PSAT to far more students, and starting in eighth grade gives them up to three times to prepare for the PSAT/NMSQT,” said Amanda Melchor, Executive Director of Secondary Teaching and Learning.

In March, students in grades eight through 10 who achieved a "meets grade level" or higher status in math and reading language arts on the most recent STAAR test will participate in the PSAT. The PSAT 8/9 is designed for eighth and ninth graders, with testing available in October or March and April. However, MISD students will undergo this test in March. The PSAT 10, tailored for 10th graders, is administered between March and April.

Both tests serve as preparation for the PSAT/NMSQT in 11th grade. Not only do they contribute to SAT readiness, but they also act as qualifying exams for the National Merit Scholarship program.

“We’re actively working to increase the number of National Merit scholars at MISD, and giving students so many chances to improve academically will go a long way toward this goal,” said Judy Bridges, Director of Advanced Academics.
