The City of Midland revealed that Texas Governor Greg Abbott has issued an authorization to lower the flags of the State of Texas and the United States of America to half-staff as a mark of respect and tribute to the late Dan Corrales, former Midland city councilman who passed away this week at the age of 45.

“Individuals, businesses, municipalities, counties, and other political subdivisions and entities in the surrounding area may fly flags at half-staff for the same period of time as a sign of honor and respect,” wrote Governor Abbott. “ The First Lady and I extend prayers of comfort for the Corrales family during their time of grief, and we urge all Texans to remember and honor Dan’s service as a dedicated public servant.”

Midland Mayor Lori Blong, earlier in the week, had formally requested Governor Abbott to authorize the lowering of flags as a tribute to Councilman Corrales.

In her letter, Mayor Blong expressed, “It is with great sorrow that we inform you of the sudden passing of Dan Corrales. He served our community with unwavering dedication, commitment, and a passion for public service. His high contributions to Midland, Texas, have left an indelible mark on our local government, and he will deeply be missed by his colleagues, constituents, and friends alike.”

The lowering of flags serves as a symbolic gesture of collective mourning and appreciation for Councilman Corrales' dedicated service to the community. The flags are expected to return to full-staff on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024, as per Governor Abbott's directive.
