Students at Bunche Elementary in Midland, Texas, were given the opportunity to pick out bikes and helmets at an event organized by Wish for Wheels and Oxy. The event aimed to promote health and wellness among the children, while also providing them with a symbol of independence and freedom.

Organizations Wish for Wheels and Oxy partnered to provide the children with the freedom that bike riding can provide. Building and giving manager at Wish for Wheels Jerry Farmer said, “It’s the biggest symbol of independence and freedom you can get at that age, so it goes a long way for kids.”

Community relations manager at Oxy Shelly Williams said, “It really supports overall health and wellness and getting kids outside. Bike riding is something they can share with their friends. And it’s something they really look forward to and it builds their self-confidence.” Volunteers at the event helped teach those who did not know how to ride a bike, and students helped each other learn, as well. As many as 50 volunteers from Oxy assembled the bikes that morning.
