The University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) is celebrating a major milestone as it marks its 50th anniversary since its founding in 1973. To commemorate this occasion, the cities of Odessa and Midland have both proclaimed Oct. 23 as "UTPB Day" in their respective jurisdictions.

In a Facebook post, the university expressed its excitement about the celebrations that kicked off the anniversary, stating, "What. A. Day." The festivities began with a pep rally, which UTPB officials said was a tribute to the institution's past and a celebration of what lies ahead.

As part of the milestone, UTPB has introduced a new accent color, blue, to accompany its longtime primary colors of orange, white, and black. The university also unveiled its newest mascot, Fiona Falcon, who is described as Freddy's best friend. According to the university's Facebook post, Fiona is here to stay and will be cheering on the Falcons for the next 50 years. UTPB has also launched a dedicated website for its 50th anniversary, which will provide updates on milestone-related events and stories.

Since its founding, UTPB has sent over 16,000 graduates into the world, according to reports from Odessa ABC station KMID News and FOX affiliate KPEJ News. To continue the celebrations, the university will host its on-campus annual homecoming parade on Oct. 27, followed by a free concert. While outside food and beverages are prohibited, there will be food trucks available. The night will conclude with a bonfire and fireworks display.

As UTPB reflects on its achievements over the past 50 years, it looks forward to a future filled with continued success and growth.
