The Midland Police Department (MPD) is taking action to address domestic violence during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Permian Basin law enforcement agency has a crime victim liaison available to answer questions and provide support. The liaison can be contacted at (432) 685-7584.
In a Facebook post on Oct. 19, MPD emphasized the importance of raising awareness and supporting survivors of domestic violence. They stated, "Love shouldn't hurt. Let's stand together to raise awareness and support survivors of domestic violence."
MPD encourages anyone experiencing domestic violence to reach out to the Victim Assistance Program. This program, run by the city of Midland, provides victims and their families with information on their rights, services, protective orders, and the Texas Crime Victims' Compensation Act. The program is overseen by the crime victim liaison.
Recognizing the challenges of identifying domestic violence, non-profit organization Safe Space offers some signs to look out for. Victims may try to please their partner to avoid reprisal and may go along with their partner's actions even if they disagree. Physical violence may result in visible injuries that victims may dismiss as "accidents" or conceal with clothing.
The Justice Department highlights that domestic violence can take various forms, but the underlying goal for the abuser is to gain or maintain power and control over their partner.
As Domestic Violence Awareness Month continues, the Midland Police Department is committed to supporting survivors and raising awareness about the issue.
