Midland Legacy senior Donny Bishop has been one of the top football players in Texas high school football this season, and this past week he was nominated for the Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week award after a monumental game in a big win for the Rebels.

Bishop is coming off an incredible game on Oct. 8 where he caught four passes for 175 yard, while also rushing seven times for 123 yards. He had five touchdowns in what turned out to be a 68-21 win against Wolfforth Friendship. Bishop was named the 6A Built Ford Tough Player of the Week and was the first player in Midland Legacy history to have at least 100 yards rushing and receiving in a game.

Bishop was one of 10 nominees for the Mr. Texas Football Award. Bishop’s strong play has thoroughly impressed his head coach.

“With the ball, he plays great,” Legacy Coach Clint Harman told mrt.com. “Without the ball, he plays great. That’s the unselfish part whenever you are having to block and you don’t know if you’re going to get the ball. Or you’re running out a route and you’re clearing out a safety. He’s doing all those things that are making us great.”

Bishop told mrt.com that it was a blessing to be named Ford Tough Player of the Week, saying that it was a goal of his that he has finally achieved.

“I just went out there and tried to do my role, help my team win,” Bishop said. “I just did what I had to do to help my team win.”

Bishop is a top student, stands at 5 foot 9 inches and weighs about 165 pounds, and the star senior has seen an increased role this year. He has played running back, wide receiver, kickoff returner and punt returner for the Rebels. Hartman asked him to play special teams and he was ready to do what it took for the team to win.

“He’s never complained about wanting the ball more,” Hartman said to mrt.com. “He just kept working. I think it’s pretty simple that we need to find ways to get him the ball. But the thing that people need to know is that he has been raised right. His mom and dad did a great job. He says ‘yes, sir, no, sir.’”

Football is a family affair for Bishop, whose cousin is Denver Bronco All-Pro linebacker Von Miller who works out with him during the summer, according to mrt.com.

Bishop isn’t the only star football player in Midland. Quarterback Ryver Rodriguez is coming off a game where he threw for four touchdowns and ran for a pair for the Midland Christian football team. While the two currently play for teams in Midland, the friends grew up in Crane playing sports together and have excelled for their respective team this season.
