It's not every week that the Midland Christian Mustangs defeat a team coached by a former Dallas Cowboys player. But that's what happened when the Mustangs defeated Argyle Liberty Christian 48-20.
“We came out with some energy and our team was really excited to play (Jason Witten’s team),” Midland Christian wide receiver Sean Madison told the Midland Reporter- Telegram.
Madison was named the newspaper's Area Player of the Week.
He had the best receiving game of his high school career with six catches and 180 yards and three touchdowns.
The win broke a two-game losing streak for the Mustangs.
"Getting a win again was big for us because we needed some energy like that," Madison told the newspaper. "Our offensive line and our quarterback did really well. We did a good job of getting first downs and getting downfield.”
The team started strong, scoring 19 points in the first quarter.
Jack King caught a lateral pass from quarterback Ryver Rodriguez and then threw to Madison. The sole defender slipped and fell, and Madison ran 40 yards for a touchdown.
“That was such a great play,” Madison told the Reporter-Telegram. “The coaches did a great job of planning that out. They knew how to read the defense. I just ran past the corner and beat him over the top. When Jack throws that ball, it was pretty much open field from there.”
Madison now has 26 receptions for the season, 424 yards and five TDs, the story said.
“He’s really improved a ton and has become a really big receiving threat for us,” Coach Greg McClendon told the newspaper. “He’s gotten better and better, and he’s pretty consistent at it. He’s a real threat for us."
