Texas State Sen. Kel Seliger recently praised Midland Crusaders Track Club's Leah Acosta and Christian Davalos for earning medals at the Games of Texas track meet.
Acosta won the girls discus in the 16-and-under division with a toss of 140 feet, 5 inches, the Midland Reporter-Telegram said. She finished second in the shot put with a throw of 38-2 ¾. She surpassed her previous best score in the shot put, achieved April 16 at Ratliff Stadium in Odessa, when she threw for 40 feet and came in fourth in the regional competition. Davalos won the boys triple jump in the 14-and-under division with a mark of 39-6 ¼, and finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 42.39 seconds.
"Congratulations to Leah Acosta and Christian Davalos of the Midland Crusaders Track Club! Both athletes put in exceptional performances at the Games of Texas Championship this past weekend," Seliger said Aug. 6 on Twitter.
The pair are coached by Tony Goyang, who has headed the club since 1994, according to his Linkedin page. Acosta is a rising junior and Davalos a freshman at Legacy High School in Midland, formerly Lee High School. The meet took place on the weekend of July 31 and August 1 in Corpus Christi.
The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation ran the meet, according to a report by the Midland Reporter-Telegram.
