Enrollment is open for placement in the 2021-22 year in Midland Independent School District's specialized elementary schools that offer curriculums focusing on future careers.

Student enrollment in Washington STEM Academy, Bowie Fine Arts Academy and Pease Communications & Technology Academy opened on Dec. 8, the district said in a release. Enrollment is by lottery for kindergarten through sixth grade for students residing within the Midland ISD community.

Washington STEM Academy offers a core education in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, the district said in the release.

"We inspire students to feel great and teach them how to do great things," Washington STEM Academy Principal Wayne Squiers said in the news release. "Our staff works hard to create an environment that students love to be involved with during the day."

Washington STEM Academy is the recipient of Imagine Nation's 2019-2020 Math School of Excellence Award.

Bowie Fine Arts Academy offers a fine arts education that immerses students in art choir, piano, dance and theater. Bowie fourth-graders have the opportunity to study orchestra and band. All of the students perform in public several times a year, including collaborations with district high schools' performances, the district said in the release.

"Our students feel successful every day," Bowie Principal Melissa Horner said in the news release. "Creativity flourishes here, and our teachers and staff are strongly committed to making the Bowie experience a time for students to shine."

Pease Communications & Technology Academy focuses on communications and technology, including photography, graphic design, news reporting, computer basics, 3D printing and robotics.

Students also study Spanish throughout their time at Pease, and their Spanish studies are transferable to high school, the district said in the release.

"Everything we have here at Pease is what I could only dream about when I was a kid," Pease Principal Gabriel Salgado said in the news release. "Students learn life skills that give them a head start on their careers, no matter what field they might enter."
