The Midland Development Corp helped recruit 11 physicians to Midland this year, the corporation said in a release.

The physicians will support 187 jobs and generate approximately $1.4 million in tax revenue for the state and local government, the organization said in the November release.

"We're excited for the success of this program, and are grateful for our partnership with Midland Health to support Midland's healthcare," the release said.

Under an agreement, Midland Health reimburses the development corporation up to $450,000 a year to help recruit physicians, according to information posted on the organization's website. The program began in 2014.

More than 50 doctors were recruited during the first five years, including otolaryngologists, orthopedic surgeons, dermatologists, rheumatologists, and family medicine practitioners. Eighty percent of the doctors recruited over those five years are still in Midland, the development corporation said on its website.

"The average physician retention rate in the United States is 40%, and the rate in Texas is 62%," the corporation said in a 2018 release on mrt.com. "The high retention rate in Midland indicates the quality of the program."

Recruiting physicians is a challenge in many cities as the demand for doctors outpaces the supply, the corporation said on its website.

"The partnership MDC has with Midland Memorial Hospital is one that we value highly," the corporation said in the mrt.com release. "The health of Midland's citizens is one of the city's most precious assets, and by nurturing our relationship with the hospital, we seek to positively impact the daily lives of Midlanders, by making sure that high-quality health care is available to everyone who needs it. This exemplifies the goals of Midland Development Corporation to support the city's economy."

Many of the physicians recruited have either been from Midland or have family here, "which is the best way to ensure that physicians are dedicated to Midland and will stay in the city long-term," the corporation said in the mrt.com release.
