University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) recently acquired a new coordinator of Veteran and Foster Alumni Services and School Certifying Official.
In his new role, UT Permian Basin alum Richard Ortiz will help veteran and military-affiliated students adjust to civilian student life and take advantage of all the resources and benefits available to them. Ortiz’s goal is for UTPB to be a top choice for military-friendly schools in the nation, according to a blog post by UTPB.
Having joined the U.S. Marine Corp. directly out of high school, Ortiz understands the struggles veterans can have transitioning into the future outside of the military. He intends to help by facilitating veteran relationships with outreach programs, connecting veterans with external services and assist in the transfer of benefits to spouses and dependents.
After his time serving his country as Network Administrator in IT, Ortiz pursued a successful professional dance career while leading in various industries. He spent 15 years teaching, performing and competing in Latin and ballroom dance and developed his dance business with a BBA in Marketing from UTPB.
“It was during my years in school that I realized that what I enjoyed doing most was helping others succeed and live fruitful lives; dancing was just a fun way to do so,” Ortiz said in the blog post. “That prompted me to switch careers, so here I am, working at UTPB helping veterans and foster alumni prepare for bright futures.”
Ortiz loves working with students. He said it’s the best part of the job. Developing relationships with students and supporting their success is his priority.
“I’m always willing to share what I know with others,” Ortiz said. “Apart from my job description, some interesting things that I can help with on campus are understanding the overall campus experience and problem solving. I’ve had the rare opportunity to see UTPB from the lens of a student and staff which gives me unique insights on the UTPB experience.”
