With Midland County students starting the school year with remote learning, the Midland County Public Libraries (MCPL) is inviting them to spend their mornings distance learning at the county libraries during the fall semester.
MCPL is implementing a new Library Connections initiative, which will extend the hours of operation at the Centennial and Downtown library branches, according to a press release from the Midland Chamber of Commerce. While at the library, students and parents can use free computers and Wi-Fi, while also having access to digital resources, extended services and the library's collections.
On Aug. 24, MCPL opened all libraries at 8:30 a.m. for students wants to distance learn at the library. Students from kindergarten through 12th grade are welcome to learn at the library, but those younger than 15 must be accompanied by their parent.
From 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., the libraries will be reserved specifically for student use. At 10 a.m., MCPL will open to the public and remain open until 5 p.m.
Students will also have access to free printing while at the library, according to the press release. Free printing will only be available during Library Connection hours. Each student can print up to 25 pages in black and white and five pages in color.
MCPL wants to be able to offer students whatever they need to succeed in school.
“We want to know what you need," Debbie Garza, director of Midland County Public Libraries, said in the press release. "What can the library do to help teachers in their virtual classrooms? What can we do to help students and families who may not be familiar with some of the educational platforms used? Whether it’s doing some research to answer your questions or creating a how-to video, our staff wants to help.”
Suggestions, comments, questions and concerns for the Library Connections initiative can be submitted to askalibrarian@co.midland.tx.us.
“We feel this is a time for the community to come together to help families, students and teachers," Garza said in the press release. "The library can help by providing public computers, free internet, digital and print resources at both of our locations and out in the community with the bookmobile."
