New names for Robert E. Lee High School and Robert E. Lee Freshman School were discussed at a meeting held by the Midland Independent School District (ISD) Citizens' Renaming Committee on Aug. 20.
Several new names were proposed by the committee after the district decided in July the schools according to a press release from Midland ISD.
The committee has 23 members, with two representatives from each School Board district, two teachers, a principal, two students and two at-large members. Blake Feldt, executive director of athletics, and Shannon Low, a Lee parent, chair the committee.
New names for the schools will be recommended during an October School Board meeting.
Midland ISD has requirements for the new names. They must fall into one of the following categories: presidents, statespersons and persons of national fame; governors, statespersons and persons of Texas fame; national, state or local educators; community and civic leaders; national, state and local symbols or events.
Community members are also encouraged to submit appropriate ideas for the new name. Ideas can be submitted online at https://www.midlandisd.net/rename. The committee will go over submitted names and include them in their discussions.
In addition to recommending new names for the the schools, the committee will focus on new mascot options, school colors and other new designs.
The Citizens' Renaming Committee was formed by the Board of Trustees, according to Midland ISD's website.
