'College matured me,' says Midland College grad who is now an educator

For Thomas Ramos, Midland College was instrumental in launching a career in education.

"Midland College has been my second home," Ramos said in a news feature posted to the college's website. "I learned about MC from my parents when I was growing up. I attended Kids' College as a child and worked for Kids' College as a teacher. I have always stayed connected."

Ramos also earned an Associate of Arts in General Studies from Midland College in 2014 before attending the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, graduating in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology. He is now a physical education teacher at De Zavala Elementary in Midland.

"My parents encouraged me to go to college and fixed it in my mind that continuing my education was important," Ramos said . He described to his college attendance as a growing experience.

"College matured me," Ramos said in the news feature. "I became a lot more resourceful and independent."

Established in Midland in 1972, Midland College is an independent junior college with its main campus on 224 acres in the state's Permian Basin region. 

Ramos has future goals of earning a master's degree and becoming a high school or college coach.

"I wanted to go straight into coaching, but I love what I am doing," Ramos said in the news feature. "I love watching my students learn and begin to believe in their abilities."
