Volleyball player Megan Ashton has been named a Scholar-Athlete for 2019-2020 year by the University of Texas-Permian Basin Athletics Department.
Ashton has excelled both on and off the volleyball court. During the season, she racked-up 339 digs and during games averaged four digs a set. She plays both defensive specialist and libero on the team. Her contributions helped the UT-Permian Basin women’s volleyball team achieve 20 wins for the first time since 2008.
Off the court, Ashton is busy as a resident assistant for first-year students. She also tutors other students at the student success center on campus. Ashton has performed extensive service work in the community as well for organizations such as the West Texas Foodbank, Honor Our Troops, and CampFire Kids. She also has volunteered at youth volleyball clinics and has served as a judge at a local science fair.
Ashton is a junior who is majoring in chemistry. Each semester she has been named to the UTPB Presidents Honor Roll and also the Lone Star Conference Roll. This academic year she had a 4.0 GPA
Ashton shares the Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award with graduating senior Jeremy Pantalion of the men’s swimming team.
Athletic Director Scott Farmer praised the two athletes. “Being a student-athlete is extremely challenging,” he told the UTPB athletic blog. “These two exemplify what it means to be both.”
