Permian Basin Water in Energy Conference kicks off Tuesday

This year’s annual Permian Basin Water in Energy Conference (PBWIEC), the third, will be held Tuesday through Friday in the Pavillion at the Midland County Horseshoe Arena.

The conference is designed to bring together experts, consultants and professionals in all areas of water and energy. About 700 people are expected to attend this year.

“PBWIEC® focuses entirely on the use, role and stewardship of water in the Permian Basin (Texas and New Mexico),” organizers said in a press release. This year, “We are maintaining our focus on issues such as sustainability of water supply and produced water disposal, while also focusing heavily on related topics such as the recent TX and NM legislation involving produced water recycling (ownership) and surface water discharge of treated water.” 

Events include an opening reception at the Petroleum Museum, 1500 W. Interstate 20 West in Midland, on Tuesday. The conference itself starts on Wednesday with registration and breakfast. That day’s activities will be capped off with a Keynote Day One Dinner at the Midland Petroleum Club, 501 W Wall St. in Midland.

Wednesday's sessions will cover: Sourcing Entities: Advantages & Challenges; Today’s EPA; UT Austin – BEG’s Latest News on Water In Energy; Developments in Produced Water Gathering & Management; New” Water: Surface Water Discharge; and Water Plans on State Lands. State Sen. Charles Perry (R-District 28) will be the keynote speaker at lunch.

Thurday's sessions include: Private Equity Perspectives, Hot Topics & Trends in New Mexico Law and Regulation; Progress in Understanding Earthquakes in the Permian Basin; Produced Water Legislation; Commoditizing Produced Water; and The Local University and You.

Friday’s sessions include: ESG, parts 1 and 2; Innovations in Science, Technology & Policy; and Piping In the Pipelines – From Private to Public Agreements. Commissioner Ryan Sitton of the Texas Railroad Commission will be the keynote speaker at lunch.
