Midland Independent School District (ISD) has announced a new initiative, STEM+M, in collaboration with Baylor College of Medicine (BCM). This program aims to provide enhanced health science opportunities for students and made possible by the Scharbauer Foundation.

According to a Midland ISD news release, the STEM+M program will build on existing initiatives within the district's Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. The initiative will introduce students to a curriculum focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Medicine as part of a pre-pre-med educational track.

The first cohort of the STEM+M program will be available to students entering seventh grade this fall. The program is designed to foster early interest in the medical field and prepare students for careers in health sciences. By eighth grade, students will have the opportunity to take an elective in scientific decision-making and apply for the Biomedical Science pathway by ninth grade.

"This will allow us to introduce students to advanced medical and scientific topics, laying a strong foundation for those interested in pursuing a medical pathway," said Dr. Amanda Melchor, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning at Midland ISD. "Our goal is to inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals, scientists, and innovators."
