Midland Independent School District (MISD) students involved in Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) participated in their first area competition this month, achieving commendable results.

According to a news release, MISD students enrolled in dual-credit health science classes had the opportunity to join HOSA last fall. The organization promotes science education, leadership, and career preparation within the healthcare sector.

The news release states that 58 students from Midland High School, Legacy High School (LHS), Midland Freshman High School (MFHS), and Legacy Freshman High School (LFHS) form the MISD HOSA chapter. HOSA organizes area and state competitions for students to assess their knowledge and skills against peers.

The release highlighted three standout students at the competition. MFHS student Rebekah Ramos received honors in the personal care category and is set to compete at the state level later this spring. David Odumbo placed in the physical therapy category, while My Mai from LHS earned a position as a state alternate in extemporaneous writing.

"I am incredibly proud of these students and how well they represented MISD in our first-ever HOSA competition," said MISD Health Sciences Coordinator Heather Escobedo. "They showed dedication, professionalism, and integrity." Escobedo added that they would support Ramos during her participation in the state competition.
