Midland Independent School District (ISD) school nurses have introduced a new tool for detecting ear infections among students.

According to a news release, nurses at all 39 district campuses can now utilize high-tech otoscopes. Director of Health Services Shay Hillman applied for a micro-grant from the Midland Education Foundation, which provided students with otoscopes and other medical supplies and apparel. Nurses receive images when needed to understand their child’s condition and determine whether a doctor’s visit is necessary.

"Students love it! They aren’t intimidated by these otoscopes like they are with the larger traditional models," said Hillman. "They can hold the monitor and see inside their own ear, which makes the process fun and less scary for them."

The new otoscopes differ from older models because they have a built-in camera and a cell phone-like monitor that aid students in seeing what their inner ear looks like, according to the news release. Aside from helping nurses detect ear infections, students receive a hands-on educational experience.

"The kids get so excited and say, ‘Let me see!’ It’s like a video game for them," said Franks Elementary nurse Gianna Cerda. "It’s making them more comfortable and even helping them understand what’s happening with their health."
