The Negro Business & Professional Women's Club of Midland Inc. (NBPW) hosted its annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on Jan 20 at the Bush Convention Center. The sold-out event featured speeches, musical performances, and fundraising efforts for student scholarships, with sponsorships from companies across West Texas.
Mayor Lori Blong attended the celebration, expressing “pride” in gathering with the community to honor Dr. King's legacy, as well as Gaven Norris and others, according to Board Member Megan Powell.
NBPW is “dedicated to promoting and protecting the interests of African American business and professional women,” according to Powell. The organization serves as a bridge for young individuals entering various professions, aiming to improve the quality of life in both local and global communities. NBPW also fosters fellowship among its members.
Through community-sponsored events like the MLK celebration, the club awards scholarships to local students. Scholarship applications are available at high school counselor offices across West Texas or can be accessed online at nbpwcofmidland.org.
Beyond educational support, NBPW provides informational forums, collects items and food for those in need, and offers guidance by connecting individuals to resources within the Midland community.
