Midland College (MC) has been awarded a $70,000 grant to support a new child care assistance program designed for first-generation college students enrolled full-time.
According to a news release, the funding originates from the Carl D. Perkins Excellence in Access and Opportunity Program and is intended to assist students within the college's Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathway. Students interested in applying for the program can request further information or submit an application.
MC President Dr. Damon Kennedy said that the grant demonstrates the institution's commitment to aiding students in overcoming obstacles to obtaining a college education. "By offering child care assistance, we’re enabling first-generation students to focus on their studies and invest in their future careers while ensuring their children are cared for in a safe, nurturing environment," he said.
The news release specifies that eligible students must be first-generation college attendees with either a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) award letter indicating unmet financial need or other documentation of financial assistance. Additionally, they must be currently enrolled as full-time CTE majors at MC, maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher, attend at least 75% of classes in person, and use licensed daycare services within the city.
