Midland Independent School District (ISD) continues to highlight its robotics program as its Career and Technical Education (CTE) department recently hosted a robotics competition where area teams performed notably.
According to a news release from the district, the FIRST Tech Challenge robotics event took place on January 11 at the Region 18 Service Center. Twenty-nine teams from the West Texas South Region participated. Legacy High School’s Robo Junkies achieved a score of 139, matching Christoval High School's Cougar Robotics. Midland High School’s Knight Dawgs followed with a score of 107, while the Bodacious Bulldogs received a score of 104.
Bill Cooke coaches the Robo Junkies, and Cory Calloway coaches Midland High School's teams, according to the news release. The teams aim to improve their performance during the FIRST Tech Challenge South Area Qualifying Meet at the Midland Horseshoe on February 8. Fans of robotics and STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are encouraged to attend and support the students.
The release also states that ConocoPhillips, Diamondback Energy, ExxonMobil, Pioneer Natural Resources, and SM Energy back the robotics competition. Additionally, Midland ISD CTE is set to host another robotics competition on January 25 at Yarbrough Elementary. On that same day, junior high teams from the district will travel to Lubbock Cooper Middle School for a similar event. The competition aims to help youth enhance their STEM skills by constructing robots through competitive events.
