Midland College has introduced the next wave of healthcare practitioners specializing in cardio-pulmonary medicine. The 2023-2025 cohort of future respiratory therapists is expected to serve the Permian Basin and other regions where they choose to work.

"You've worked tirelessly to master the art and science of saving lives, learning to be the breath of hope in someone's hardest moments. The world needs your expertise and we couldn't be prouder of the professionals you've become," said Respiratory Care Department Chair Kally Eddison in a Facebook post.

According to the college's website, respiratory therapy is considered one of the most critical careers within healthcare. Graduates from this program often find employment in hospitals, emergency departments, intensive care units, neonatal intensive care units, and diagnostic laboratories.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that respiratory therapy is expected to be among the fastest-growing careers. Over the next decade, demand for respiratory therapists is projected to increase by 13 percent. These professionals assist patients with breathing difficulties by conducting diagnostic tests, administering treatments, and monitoring progress.

Indeed reports that the average salary for a respiratory therapist in Texas is just under $34 per hour.
