The Midland Independent School District (MISD) and the Midland Police Department are both observing National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.
According to a Facebook post by the school district, they expressed gratitude towards police officers working for MISD for their dedication to safety. "We appreciate everything our MISD Police Officers do each day," the district wrote. "You keep the safety of every student and employee as your number one priority, and you make a difference in the lives of students and the community through volunteering and education. Today we celebrate you!"
These sentiments were echoed by the Midland Police Department on their Facebook page. "Today, we honor the brave men and women of law enforcement who dedicate their lives to protecting and serving our community," the department wrote. "Join us in thanking those who work tirelessly to keep Midland safe. Your courage and commitment do not go unnoticed."
Governor Gregg Abbott also made a declaration concerning this occasion on X, highlighting various challenges faced by police officers such as drug trafficking and human smuggling. "This work brings extraordinary risk, and each day officers don the badge knowing full well what the duty may require," he said in his declaration proclaiming January 9 as Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Abbott added that this recognition dates back to 2016 when six Dallas police officers were killed in the line of duty, establishing this day to express gratitude towards law enforcement officers.
