Midland College alumnus and committee member Reagan Hignojos delivered a speech at the Midland College Spring 2025 Convocation on Jan. 6.

Hignojos discussed the value of community colleges, drawing from his journey as a first-generation college student.

“Midland College has an important place in the world because it is a reliable, accessible, and valued institution of higher education,” he said in his speech.

Hignojos explained how he initially studied at the University of Houston after graduating from Midland High School, and how he struggled and felt “alone” at the university.

“I did not know anyone that knew how to navigate the new journey I was about to embark on,” he said.

His return to Midland College years later marked a turning point in his academic journey, where he claims Midland College “felt like home.”

He praised the faculty and support staff of Midland College, recalling how professors, some of whom he knew from high school, provided guidance and encouragement. Hignojos said that Midland College’s sense of community is what sets it apart from larger institutions, where students can feel like just another number.

As Midland College continues to grow, Hignojos encouraged the college community to preserve its welcoming atmosphere.

“Midland College has an important place in the world because it is a reliable, accessible, and valued institution of higher education in the most important, stable, secure, and strategic source of energy in the world,” he said. “What you do here truly does affect the globe and not just the students that you serve. Take pride in this community that you’re part of.”
