Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Permian Basin (BBBS) is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025. The milestone will mark five decades of service to youth in Midland and Odessa, and will include introduction of a new Executive Director, Kayla Minchew, who stepped into the role in October 2024.
BBBS was founded in 1975 to help young people reach their full potential. The organization expanded its reach to Odessa in 2018, launching programs at Blackshear Elementary School to address the increasing demand for mentorship in the area.
In 2022, BBBS broadened its services further by extending the eligible age range for mentees up to 21 years. This decision was aimed to support young adults during critical transitional phases of their lives. By 2024, the organization established over 100 matches between mentors ("Bigs") and mentees ("Littles"), reflecting the organization’s recovery and growth following challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
BBBS provides two mentoring programs, a Community-Based Mentoring program and a School-Based Mentoring program, to foster connections.
“These programs are designed to match mentors and mentees based on backgrounds, interests, and personality traits, ensuring compatibility and the potential for a meaningful connection,” said Fatima Castillo, Resource Development Director.
BBBS participates in community events to recruit volunteers and raise awareness about its mission. The organization attends resource fairs and hosts meet-ups to connect with individuals who are willing to make a positive impact in a child’s life.
One of BBBS's standout initiatives is the "Little Depot," an annual event where Littles can select Christmas gifts for their family members. Supported by donations from companies and individuals across West Texas, the event provides items such as blankets, board games, kitchen gadgets, and wreaths.
“The Little Depot not only brings joy to participants but also instills the values of generosity and community service,” said Minchew.
To commemorate its 50 years of service, BBBS is planning a grand gala in October 2025. The event will celebrate the organization’s achievements, honor the contributions of volunteers and supporters, and reinforce its commitment to empowering youth in the Permian Basin.
“We are so encouraged by Big Brothers Big Sisters' growth and the successful expansion into Odessa. We are always seeking volunteers to step up as mentors,” Minchew added.
