Weather conditions are expected to change as a cold front approaches, bringing cooler temperatures and increased chances of rain over the weekend.

"Warmer than average temperatures and decreased cloud cover are expected today, before a cold front moving through the area later today into tomorrow leads to cooler than average temperatures and increased cloud cover tomorrow. #txwx #nmwx," the National Weather Service (NWS) Midland wrote on X.

According to the NWS, today's forecast includes a high of 68 degrees Fahrenheit and a low of 43, with minimal wind gusts. Thursday is predicted to be partly sunny with a high near 56 and a low of 43. Temperatures will continue to decline, with Friday's high reaching 48 and a low of 44, along with a 20% chance of showers. Saturday is expected to see a slight increase in temperature with a high of 52, but the 20% chance of showers will persist throughout the day.

During an Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) board meeting on Tuesday, lead meteorologist Chris Coleman discussed current climate patterns that resemble those seen in 2021 when a winter storm disrupted power across much of Texas. Coleman predicts both warmer winter conditions and an increased likelihood of extreme cold events.

"You can have a warm winter in Texas and have a cold extreme, and that's becoming more frequent," said Coleman. "That doesn't mean we're going to have Uri, but it does, again, say that we're in a pattern that supports something like a Uri this winter."
