The Midland Independent School District (MISD) Board of Trustees recently convened to acknowledge student achievements, receive updates on the 2023 school bond, and provide an academic progress report.
According to a district news release, the Midland High School Football Team was recognized for receiving the Judge Pat Baskin Family Volunteer of the Year Award and for being named the Association of Fundraising Professionals Permian Basin Chapter Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy. Additionally, MISD students were honored for their performance in the city-wide Fire Prevention Poster competition and Christ Church Anglican's Festival of St. Francis Art Contest. South Elementary was acknowledged for achieving Marzano Level 1 Certification.
Renovations at Santa Rita, Bush, Scharbauer, and De Zavala elementary schools are ongoing with MWM Architects overseeing design duties. Sitework at the current Midland Freshman campus is nearing completion with 80-90% of construction finished. The district also announced a partnership with Betenbough Homes as a community partner for Lone Star Trails Elementary and plans to extend this partnership to General Tommy Franks Elementary.
The percentage of students reading at grade level from kindergarten through second grade is currently 58%, with the district aiming to reach 61% by year-end. This initiative is part of Goal Progress Measure (GPM) 1.3, which focuses on improving reading levels among young students. The first baseline data comes from this year’s mCLASS assessment, and progress will be revisited at a March board meeting.
