Jones Elementary has been named the Summit K12 Elementary Campus of the Year for its efforts in closing the educational gap among emergent bilingual students.
According to a news release from Midland Independent School District (MISD), Jones Elementary was selected from over 4,000 campuses across 750 districts that utilize Summit K12's platforms. The online program employs a standards-based supplemental curriculum and recently announced the winners and finalists of the 2024 Summies Awards.
"It is a great honor for Jones Elementary to be recognized for the Summies," said Ms. Tanya Duewall, principal of Jones Elementary. "It is fantastic for my bilingual students and staff to receive this honor."
The district comprises 39 schools serving just under 500 students, as said in the news release. At Jones Elementary, there are 112 students classified as emergent bilinguals, with 77% economically disadvantaged and 52% considered at-risk students.
MISD reported that the school received the award in October during the 52nd Annual Texas Association for Bilingual Education (TABE) Conference. Summit K12 has been presenting educational awards since 2022, categorizing honors based on districts' emergent bilingual student populations rather than total enrollment.
