The Midland County Commissioners Court approved a proclamation during its meeting on Nov. 19 recognizing the annual Angel Tree Ceremony. The event, which has been held in the county for over 30 years as a memorial for victims of crime, is set for Dec. 6.
The ceremony, organized by the Midland Victims' Coalition, will honor those whose lives were taken by criminal acts. The ceremony also raises awareness of resources available to victims and their families.
According to a Midland County representative, each year more victims are added to the memorial tree.
The proclamation, which was read during the meeting, highlights the event’s significance, stating, “The ceremony honors the victims of crime and brings awareness to the resources available to victims and their families. Their lives were taken away from a criminal, and their absence forever impacts families and friends.”
The proclamation continued, “Whereas lives are changed forever, but the Angel Tree serves as a way of coping during the holidays, with their presence missed at home. This tree represents their memory, the love of them, tears of joy, prayers for them, and a message of never being forgotten.”
The Midland Victims' Coalition, composed of local non-profit agencies and law enforcement, aims to support victims’ rights and provide information about available resources.
