The Preserve and Zoo Midland are collaborating to create a visitor experience that integrates natural beauty with wildlife. The Preserve will span over 178 acres, offering dining, retail, and entertainment options, as well as public open areas and a “Central Green” space, while preserving more than 40% of the land for green spaces and parks. Zoo Midland will occupy over 50 acres of the former Nueva Vista golf course and is positioned adjacent to The Preserve.

The teams behind both projects sought each other out as partners by sharing a vision for a space that residents of all ages can enjoy.

“Teaming up with The Preserve aligned with our vision for a family-based experience, making the creation of a family-friendly learning environment more attainable,” said Jeff Beard, a board member for the zoo, in a previous interview.

The collaboration between The Preserve and Zoo Midland is intended to offer interconnected activities and attractions. The two developments will feature complimentary amenities, such as recreational areas at The Preserve that promote outdoor engagement while providing educational opportunities at Zoo Midland.

“It's a perfect match,” said Zoo Director Jason Green. “It's a perfect match for the city and the people who live here because it gives so many opportunities in one spot. Zoo Midland will complement The Preserve and The Preserve will complement Zoo Midland.”

Green also noted that the shared experience “also gives a great narrative about what type of city Midland is” and that the “entire site is something visitors can be proud of.”

Before construction begins, the teams have worked together to design a cohesive layout that integrates the features of both The Preserve and Zoo Midland. Extensive land redevelopment is currently in the works to enhance support for the natural lakes and improve flood control measures that have previously caused flooding in the Grasslands neighborhoods.

“We couldn’t have asked for better partners to walk through this development process. Every step of the way they have been very easy to collaborate with,” said Co-Founder of The Preserve Adum Cunyus. “When we reach the finish line I really feel like the Zoo Midland & The Preserve will be able to offer something unique and special for all Midlanders to enjoy.”
