Bass Pro Shops has commenced construction on its 17th store in Texas, aimed at serving residents of the Permian Basin.
In February, the Midland Times reported that Mayor Lori Blong expressed a preference for the store to be located in Midland but was pleased it would still be within Midland County. The new store will be situated within Odessa's city limits, though it remains part of Midland County. Officials from the city of Midland, the Midland Development Corporation, and Midland County contributed to bringing the store to this area. The opening is anticipated in spring 2025.
"Today, the City of Odessa, ICA, and Bass Pro Shops broke ground on a brand-new, 100,000-square-foot Bass Pro Shops! Located on HWY 191, just past the Cinergy Family Entertainment Center, this store will be the largest outdoor retailer in Odessa & across the Permian Basin," said the City of Odessa in a tweet.
According to a news release, the retail space was initially planned to be 65,000 square feet but has expanded to 100,000 square feet with a wilderness theme. Although Bass Pro Shops considered Midland as a potential location, they ultimately partnered with ICA Development to build in Odessa while still serving the broader region.
"We have a great deal of passion for the entire Permian Basin Region and the amazing range of outdoor recreation options it offers," said Johnny Morris, founder of Bass Pro Shops. "This new location in Odessa will allow us to strengthen our relationship with the sportsmen and women of the great state of Texas and will make it easy for people and families across the plains of West Texas to spend time together in the great outdoors. For that we are deep down proud and excited."
