The Midland Police Department (MPD) assisted officials in a Permian Basin county in investigating a cluster bomb scare on the morning of September 9. Authorities were summoned to the city of McCamey in Upton County.
According to a September 10 Facebook post by MPD, police received a call from Upton County Sheriff Sara Brown for assistance.
Brown was traveling to the 300 block of South Crockett, which is near a school, in response to what was believed to be a cluster bomb munition.
The post said that MPD subsequently contacted Dyess Air Force Base Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD), and base officials determined the object appeared to be a military munition.
Though a perimeter was set up, there was no threat to the school at the time.
MPD said in an incident report that an X-ray of the item was taken, and it yielded no threat.
It was ultimately revealed that what was initially perceived as a cluster bomb was actually an oilfield tool.
