Midland County is celebrating completion of a $700,000 public safety radio antenna project. The project was funded by a Cox Communications grant to upgrade two antennas and add three new ones. The completion improves emergency communication across Midland and Ector Counties, including Odessa and The Texas Department of Public Safety.
"Our new radio system went live on August 27, 2024," officials announced during the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Greenwood tower.
According to U.S. Rep. August Pfluger, the project "is a significant step forward for ensuring our officers are well-equipped to serve the community."
Pfluger expressed gratitude to the City of Midland, City of Odessa, and Ector County for their partnership in creating interoperability across the Permian Basin.
The project addresses communication gaps that have affected public safety efforts, particularly in rural areas. The improved connectivity between local and regional emergency services will allow for faster response times and better collaboration during emergencies.
"This initiative ensures that our law enforcement and first responders can communicate seamlessly across county lines, safeguarding West Texans," Pfluger said.
According to County Commissioner Luis Sanchez, the upgraded antennas are already “enhancing emergency response and keeping our communities safer than ever."
