The city of Midland is a recipient of a Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT).

According to a September 6 Facebook post by the city, Midland will receive $8.6 million for the implementation of a project outlined in the city’s Vision Zero Comprehensive Safety Action Plan (CSAP).

Funding will go toward improvements to the Lamesa Road corridor and citywide signal retiming, the post said.

In addition to the $8,664,368 from the federal government, the city will match $2,166,092, bringing the total project cost to $10,830,460.

The post said that the proposed safety improvements are projected to decrease total crashes by 618 over a 20-year period at the section of Lamesa Road between Business 20 and Gist Avenue.

The area accounts for 41% of pedestrian and bicycle crashes in Midland.

All of the city’s intersections will undergo updated signal timing to create a complete system to promote citywide safety and efficiency.
