Mayor Lori Blong honored a City of Midland employee as the latter marked an important anniversary. Evelyn Mathis, who works in the city’s water department, commemorated 14 years on the job on September 1.

According to a September 3 Facebook post by Mayor Blong, Mathis first started working for the city in a temporary position. She soon received word from a friend at church of an open permanent position and immediately applied.

According to the post, Mathis has extensive experience in customer service. While she has encountered upset individuals, there are more people whom she describes as amazing.

"There’s always a new learning experience when it comes to working with people," Mathis said in the post.

Mathis said that residents ought to know that it’s her job to help them. She had her first such experience as a teenager in Big Spring.

It is no surprise that Mathis believes that it is the people who are the best part of her job. "My coworkers are like a family away from home," she said in the post. "We’re really close, we take care of each other."

Mathis’s life away from the office includes watching the Hallmark Channel and taking care of her pet dog.
