The Midland Fire Department (MFD) responded to several emergencies over the Labor Day weekend, including water rescues, a warehouse blaze, and a residential fire.
MFD responded to 28 water rescue calls between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 30, following heavy rainfall in the area. The National Weather Service reported 1.6 inches of rain during this period and emphasized the dangers of driving into floodwaters, stating, “Each year, more deaths occur due to flooding than from any other thunderstorm-related hazard. Many of these drownings are preventable. Never drive around the barriers blocking a flooded road." Midland Times has shared images and footage of heavy rainfall throughout the city on our Facebook page for those interested in viewing more.
On Saturday, Aug. 31, MFD crews also responded to a fire at a warehouse on East County Road 140. The fire, which began around 11:27 a.m., was reportedly caused by a spark from welding. “The building contained flammable materials that caused rapid-fire growth,” said MFD officials. Fire crews were able to contain the fire to the warehouse section of the building, and no injuries were reported. All occupants were evacuated safely.
Later that evening, MFD crews rescued two individuals from a fire at a residence on Storey Avenue. The fire was reported at 11:05 p.m. and was located at the front of the building. According to an MFD statement, the crews found two victims inside the house and performed rescue. Both individuals were transported to the ER, with one listed in critical condition and the other in stable condition. The fire was extinguished.
