Heather Bredimus visited with Midland Times about her run for Midland City Council District 1 seat where she will face Bryan Stubbs. Bredimus, a community advocate and lifelong resident of Midland, has nearly 20 years of experience in various community organizations.
Working as a freelance professional in marketing, media, websites, and graphic design, she draws from her early career as an elementary education teacher. “I developed skills in communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution, all that you need in working freelance and as a City Councilman,” said Bredimus.
In 2023, she also graduated from the LBJ Women’s Campaign School at UT Austin. The school trains leaders to run for office or manage campaigns regardless of political party affiliation, according to its website.
Bredimus is focused on understaffing issues in the Midland Police Department. “Our police have been understaffed for a long time and that needs to be fixed,” she said.
While she says she is committed to resolving the Firefighters Pension funding shortage through city reserve funds and negotiations with the firefighters, she also says she opposes a bond to address the problem. On the topic of firefighter’s residency, she stated, “The point is not where they live but that they work for the City of Midland and protect the citizens of this city.”
Bredimus emphasizes the need for better communication between departments to manage road projects and avoid delays caused by supply chain issues and staffing shortages. She is concerned about the impact of traffic disruptions on residents and advocates for more coordinated efforts. She is also involved in addressing the issue of blowing trash across Midland, organizing and participating in cleanup efforts.
Bredimus will be participating in a community cleanup event scheduled for September 7, at Loop 250 and Midland Dr. “I truly believe in leading from the front,” said Bredimus.
Bredimus is a native of Midland, a wife, and a mother of four. She says she believes strongly in supporting children in the foster care system. She and her husband have fostered 13 children and continue to assist foster and adoptive families through area resources.
She serves as a Certified Rape Victim Advocate at the Crisis Center of West Texas and is involved in local nonprofits. She is the President Elect of the Rotary Club of Midland, a Board Member for the League of Women Voters, and serves on the Citizens Development and Hotel/Motel Advisory Board with the City of Midland.
She was recognized for her contributions to the community, and was named "2022 Mummer of the Year." She received the "John Briggs Memorial Volunteer Spotlight" for the 2023 season, according to her Facebook page.
