Salsa Fiesta, a vibrant dance community focused on salsa and bachata, is making waves in West Texas. With lively rhythms, passionate dancing, and an inclusive atmosphere, Salsa Fiesta has become a beloved event for dance enthusiasts of all skill levels. Their mission is clear: to create a space where everyone can share their love for dancing, especially salsa and bachata.
Gloria Salazar, co-owner of The Destination, which recently hosted a Salsa Fiesta event, shared her enthusiasm.
"The Destination is a perfect fit for Salsa Fiesta because we support all music genres and welcome all-age events. We believe in creating spaces where everyone feels welcome and can have fun," she said.
Salsa Fiesta began in response to a need for healthy, fun, and social activities in West Texas. Since their first dance social in February, they have held dance socials and weekly classes every other Saturday.
"Our goal is to celebrate salsa and bachata, dances with rich cultural heritage that bring joy to people," Salazar said. "When COVID happened, many activities stopped, and people were hesitant to go out and have fun. Salsa Fiesta filled that gap, creating a space where people could come together and dance."
The founder of Salsa Fiesta, Tayde Valdez, played a crucial role in its formation. Collaborating with local dance schools like Love to Dance in Odessa, which continued teaching through the pandemic, Valdez organized a small group to start healthy distractions in Midland.
"We didn't know if people would be interested, but we brought in teachers from the city and nearby. That’s how Salsa Fiesta was formed," said Salazar. The events include an hour-long class for beginners, followed by a social dance session, attracting more attendees each time.
Traditionally, Salsa Fiesta events draw 30 to 50 participants, ranging from young adults to seniors. However, the event at The Destination in May attracted approximately 80 people. Salazar attributed the increase in attendance to The Destination’s regular crowd, which added to the event's vibrant and inclusive atmosphere.
"Our crowd is diverse, from college students to experienced dancers, which makes the events even more special," she said.
Salsa Fiesta benefits the community by providing a fun and healthy way for people to socialize and stay active. Dancing is an excellent form of exercise and relieves stress. Additionally, the events foster a sense of community and belonging, bringing together people from different backgrounds who share a common interest.
"It's a mutually beneficial relationship between the venue and Salsa Fiesta that makes these events possible," Salazar said.
Beginners are always welcome at Salsa Fiesta. The community offers beginner-friendly classes to help newcomers learn the basics and feel comfortable on the dance floor. Experienced dancers are always willing to share tips and encourage those just starting out.
"Salsa and bachata are accessible to everyone, regardless of skill level," said Salazar.
Looking ahead, Salsa Fiesta and The Destination are contemplating a long-term relationship, with plans to announce regular socials next year.
"We are incredibly proud of the growth and success we have experienced," Salazar said. "Social events are more than just an event; they are a celebration of culture, community, and the joy of dance."
Everyone is invited to join the next social at The Destination on July 27. Whether you are an experienced dancer, a couple, or just looking to try something new, the energy and camaraderie at these events are truly special. In Odessa, classes are available at Love to Dance Studio, and more information can be found on social media under Salsa Fiesta.
