Art enthusiasts eagerly await the unveiling of celebrated artist David Mercado's latest exhibition at the Arts Council of Midland (ACM) from May 16 to June 30, 1506 W. Illinois Ave., in Midland. Hailing from Austin, Texas, Mercado brings over 25 years of experience and a rich portfolio of works that have graced galleries and exhibitions nationwide.

ACM's Associate Director, Alicia Castillo, highlighted Mercado's artistic journey, noting his initial focus on capturing the beauty and dynamism of hummingbirds, a series that garnered him national recognition. "But as his career evolved, Mercado ventured into painting landscapes, showcasing the depth and complexity of his work," said Castillo.

"David primarily works in mixed media on wood and paper, with his latest series spotlighting the vibrant birdlife of Texas," Castillo said. She expressed Mercado's anticipation for a bustling spring and summer season, with upcoming exhibitions slated across the Lone Star State.

Castillo recounted ACM's introduction to Mercado's work during the 2023 Celebration of the Arts festival, where he participated as an artist and was honored with the prestigious Joan Baskin Memorial Prize for Visual Arts.

Despite residing in a bustling metropolitan area, Mercado's incorporation of traditional elements into his art promises to captivate Midlanders. An opening reception on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. offers both seasoned art enthusiasts and novices an opportunity to engage with Mercado's masterpieces. Castillo expects hundreds of visitors to see the exhibition while at the ACM.

"ACM welcomes visitors of all ages and backgrounds, serving as a platform for cultural enrichment and artistic appreciation," Castillo said. She highlighted ACM's quarterly series as a unique opportunity for Midlanders to explore art beyond their local sphere and for local artists to engage with their peers and audience.

In addition to Mercado's exhibition, ACM has a diverse lineup of showcases planned throughout the year, including an exhibit in October celebrating Dias de los Muertos, and selections from the Collections of the Arts Council of Midland in November and December.

"ACM remains committed to enriching lives through the arts, fostering community engagement, and promoting cultural dialogue," said Castillo, echoing the council's mission. "We hope every visitor leaves our exhibits with a deeper understanding and appreciation of the art and artists presented."
