Cookie lovers and aspiring decorators in Midland have a sweet opportunity to unleash their creativity as Cookie Encounter hosts its Cookie Decorating Class for Beginners. The next class on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Midland location, and hopes to draw crowds eager to learn the art of cookie decoration.

Owner of the custom cookie company Heather Tew, a passionate cookie enthusiast turned entrepreneur, started these classes after attending an inspiring workshop two years ago at the annual Cookie Con.

“My thought was, I think I know someone who could benefit from this,” said Tew. “Midland doesn’t have anything like it. After getting over my fear of failure and the logistics of finding a place to do it, I started teaching over a year ago.”

Tew's classes cater to all skill levels, from novices to seasoned decorators. With a capacity of 6-15 participants per class, she ensures an intimate learning environment where attendees receive hands-on guidance from a pro. Tew also provides all necessary supplies for students to craft six cookies during the session. The cost is $75 per student.

"I love teaching the classes," she said, "We host a public class once a month with different themes, usually coinciding with the month's holiday. Additionally, I do private parties, including birthdays, work parties, or just a gathering of friends."

The diversity of attendees adds to the charm of the classes, as Tew said, "I have had people come as a date night, which is fun, and also a girls night out. Mother-daughter groups are also very popular groups that attend as well. I even have a few males who attend every month. It’s fun to see the group we have each month."

Tew’s journey into the world of cookies began as a stay-at-home mom seeking a creative outlet. What started as a hobby blossomed into a full-fledged business, driven by demand for custom designed treats and Tew's passion for the craft.

"It all started as a hobby and turned into more when people asked me to make cookies for a baby shower, and it kind of snowballed after that," she said.

Having established roots in Midland for over 17 years, Tew expressed her love for the community, crediting her husband as her biggest supporter. "We love it here," she said. "He is my biggest cheerleader and supports all my crazy ideas with cookies."

Beyond her business endeavors, Tew actively gives back to the community through donations and sponsorships. Notably, her contributions to the city's annual kick-off party shows that she's committed to local engagement and support.

For those interested in joining the cookie decorating fun, Tew encourages staying updated through the Cookie Encounter’s social media channels. Classes usually sell out, so it’s best to snag a seat when you first hear about it.

With a blend of passion, creativity, and community spirit, Cookie Encounter continues to spread joy, one delicious cookie at a time in Midland.
