The Office of the Texas Governor has initiated the nomination process for the 2024 Star of Texas Awards. The awards are bestowed upon peace officers, firefighters, emergency medical first responders, and federal law enforcement officials who have been seriously injured or killed in the line of duty.

Nominations will be accepted until June 13, 2024. The nomination form is available on the official website at gov.texas.gov/organization/cjd/star-of-texas. An advisory committee appointed by the Governor reviews award nominations annually for each of the three categories of first responders.

To qualify for the award, the critical incident must have taken place between September 1, 2003, and June 13, 2024. Individuals can also nominate private citizens who were seriously injured or killed while aiding or attempting to aid a peace officer, firefighter, or emergency medical first responder.

The Governor's office has been awarding the Star of Texas Awards since 2003, following approval by the Texas Legislature of House Bill (HB) 1937. The statute governing the awards has been amended twice since then. To date, over 712 courageous Texans have received the honor.
