The city of Midland is set to install a canopy at the Southeast Senior Center, creating an outdoor space that has been identified as a high priority by the center's patrons in Washington Park.

According to the agenda for the April 9 Midland City Council meeting, consultant firm PGAL conducted a needs assessment in 2022 for the Midland Senior Centers. The assessment pinpointed a need for outdoor space, and plans have been made to add a 2,000-square-foot outdoor addition through the installation of a covered patio.

W.R. Construction submitted a proposal under Sourcewell for $313,716, which was accepted by the city council, as per the same council meeting's agenda. With an added contingency of 10%, the total cost of the project is estimated at $345,000.

According to the council meeting's agenda, staff had initially applied for $200,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for this outdoor space project based on original estimates. However, an initial bid exceeded $500,000 prompting W.R. Construction to submit their proposal. The project will be financed through CDBG funds and an additional $145,000 from a Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act project.

Work on this new development is anticipated to commence immediately and could be completed by August 1st this year according to information provided during the April 9 Midland City Council meeting.
