At the Odessa Police Academy 26th Session Graduation & Swearing-In Ceremony held on February 23, 2024, four new police officers were proudly inducted into the Odessa Police Department. Among them was Officer Odilia Soto, who expressed her joy by saying, “It’s never too late! This is the best day of my life.”

Chief Gerke announced the successful graduation of Officer Ethan Ryan McKown, Officer Joseph Gabriel Valerio, and Officer Mario Julian Vera. Officer McKown, a native of Odessa, Texas, shared his excitement about the new career path he is embarking on, looking forward to the experiences and training ahead. He aspires to one day teach new police recruits and be part of the SWAT team.

Officer Soto, also born and raised in Odessa, Texas, revealed her passion for helping people and addressing crime within the community. She expressed her desire to become a homicide detective or join the Traffic Unit in the future.

Officer Valerio, originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, emphasized his dedication to making a positive impact on the Odessa community. He is eager to explore the diverse opportunities within the police department and utilize his skills to serve the public effectively.

Officer Vera, who hails from Honduras and was raised in the Bronx, New York, is excited about serving and making a difference in the Odessa community. He aims to become a K9 officer in the future.

The graduation ceremony, held at the Odessa Marriott Hotel & Conference Center, also saw the graduation of two deputies from the Midland County Sheriff’s Department, further strengthening the law enforcement presence in the region.

The new officers' diverse backgrounds and shared commitment to serving the community highlight the dedication and passion present in the Odessa Police Department's latest recruits.
